Book Review: "The Spider Silk Scarf" by Ana Reyes

Nora is a thief. There’s just something about taking an object that doesn’t belong to her that gives her a thrill. The more expensive, the better. She has a closet full of her treasures in the apartment she shares with her fiancé, Ben.⁣

⁣ “She didn’t think of herself as a bad person. She had simply refused to accept that, because she was born poor (and was, statistically speaking, almost certain to die poor too), she didn’t deserve nice things. She stole only from the rich and never from anyone she knew.“⁣

⁣ One day, Ben, a plumber, is working in the house of Mrs. Martin, a reclusive old woman who was rumored to be a witch when Nora was growing up. He told Nora that he overheard Mrs. Martin talking about a precious item, a scarf woven from the silk of black widow spiders. Apparently it took 12 weavers years to make the scarf, and only 11 survived.⁣

Nora must get her hands on that scarf. It becomes an obsession for her. And even though she knows it isn’t wise to steal from a woman who might be a witch, she just can’t stop thinking about it. She needs to add it to her treasures. But she has no idea just what she’ll find when she breaks into the house late one night.⁣

⁣ Ana Reyes weaved (pun intended) a really fascinating story. It was a bit intense, a bit creepy, and I had no idea what would happen. This was one of Amazon’s First Reads for August, and I really liked it.
